QUINCY — The Burlington Bees led 14-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning and threatened to end Thursday night’s Prospect League game by the 10-run rule, but the Quincy Doggy Paddlers kept everyone around for the full nine innings before finally losing 16-12 at QU Stadium.
Burlington scored six runs in the second inning against Doggy Paddlers starter Nathan Murphy, then knocked him out of the game with three more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-0 lead. General Scholfield’s two-run single in the bottom of the fifth finally put Quincy on the scoreboard, but the Bees tacked on five more runs against reliever Jordan Sfyndillis in the seventh.
Quincy’s offense finally sparked to life, scoring three times on an RBI double by Krew Bond, a sacrifice fly by Jimmy Koza and a two-out single by Wandel Campana. Burlington scored twice in the top of the eighth, but the Doggy Paddlers stayed alive by scoring six times in the bottom of the inning. Scholfield hit a grand slam just inside the right-field foul pole, Campana drove in a run with a groundout and Tommy Harrison hit an RBI double.
A sacrifice fly by Andrew Gould in the bottom of the ninth kept the Doggy Paddlers’ chances alive, but Jimmy Koza flew out with a runner on base to end the 3-hour, 16-minute game.
Danny Harris allowed one hit over six innings to earn the victory for the Bees. Cole Yearsley had two hits and drove in four runs. Conor Fitzpatrick and Ryan Skwarek each had two hits and drove in two runs.
Scholfield finished with five RBIs and three hits for the Doggy Paddlers. Bond and Harrison both had two hits.
