O’FALLON, Mo. — The Quincy Doggy Paddlers used a pair of late-inning rallies to edge the O’Fallon Hoots, 4-3, on Wednesday night at CarShield Field in Prospect League action.
Trailing 2-0 entering the seventh, Quincy (2-4) got on the board with an RBI single from Wandel Campana, and tied it when Jameson Johnson brought home a second run with a sacrifice fly. In the eighth, Johnson came through again — this time with a go-ahead RBI single — before General Schofield padded the lead with an RBI double.
The Hoots (5-2), who had won five straight to open the season, got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Brian Gould but stranded the tying run on base in the eighth and ninth innings.
Jake Merda led Quincy at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double. Johnson drove in two, and Schofield and Campana each added an RBI.
On the mound, Cody Shaffer turned in a strong start for the Doggy Paddlers, allowing two runs over 5 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Anthony Sorrentino closed out the ninth with a scoreless inning to earn the save.
Quincy committed three errors but overcame the miscues with clutch hitting late and a bullpen that held firm in the final two frames.
The Doggy Paddlers will be back in action tomorrow at Burlington with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
